Sunflower oil has been shown to be protective when used to massage preterm infants (Taheri et al, 2017). The compounds in sunflower oil enhance the skin-barrier function and notably reduces inflammation. Calendula is a highly soothing herb, whose antiseptic properties protect the skin from infection. Sesame oil is known for its warming properties can enhance the feeling of relaxation when used for infant massage. **Note: In some instances, such as preterm/low birth weight infants, massage can be used regularly from birth. However, for full-term infants, we’d recommend not beginning infant massage until 4-6 weeks postbirth. The birth canal provides many soothing and antimicrobial substances for infant skin. Allowing the skin to develop naturally is preferable. Always patch test products on baby’s skin prior to use.**
